- Office installed with Click-to-Run and Windows Installer on same computer isn't supported
Looking for:
Microsoft project 2016 compatibility with office 365 free -Microsoft project 2016 compatibility with office 365 free. Can I install Microsoft Project 2016 Standard on a PC with Microsoft 365 en-us?
With the update of Office , these two products are now incompatible, requiring me to stay on Office , or buy a new expensive license for Project Standard. This of course prevents taking advantage of the main point of a subscription Office license, that you can upgrade to the newest versions when they come available. I would like to understand whether this incompatibility will be resolved, and if not, whether an upgrade license will be provided for Project Standard to Project Standard.

Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Both Visio and Project are expensive products that I don't want to upgrade but I also don't want to lose them.
Was this reply helpful? Now you know it is safe to upgrade — and also what features you can expect I will tell you about a couple of things of which you need to be aware. You cannot mix versions if you are running click to run installations — so upgrading an Office ProPlus click to run install from to will want to uninstall and click to run products it finds — such as Project and Visio for example.
You will need to update to the for these too. You cannot mix click to run with msi based installers of the same version. You could either change to Project Pro for Office , or get a click to run Project Professional Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 5 people found this reply helpful. Don't rely on this in your decision to upgrade.
I have not found any answer to date other than run Project on a seperate machine! I posted this reply on that blog when I was researching this:. And yet, even though I have a retail copy of Project I could not install Office until it was removed and cannot re-install it with Office present. This is despite being advised by MS "Support" originally that this would work and having gone back to them they are saying Project cannot be on the same PC with Office It turned out that although I have a retail copy of Project bought through a work plan it is a click to run install.
Hence, it cannot install with Office I was able to get an MSI installer version from Technet by downloading an evaluation copy of Project after registering. After installing I used my retail key rather than the provided evaluation key and I now have a working copy of Project beside Office :.
There was one final wrinkle on Windows Project did not show up in the Start Menu. Find the Office folder, right click any program to "show file" and then step up one folder and you will see a Project shortcut. Copy to Desktop. Drag the shortcut to this folder and give permission to copy. Log out and log in and Project will be in the Apps list and you can pin to Start if you want. I feel everyone's pain. I had the exact same problem as you have. After purchasing a subscription to Office - , I found that Project Standard did not function at all.
I called their help line at without much success in resolving the issue. Sagar was very helpful. I gave him control of my machine and he determined that the only "fix" to the problem was do download Microsoft Project Standard to replace the version. I did this and it works. Read on. For the record, I was not requested to nor did I pay anything for Project Standard. Believe it or not, if you try to assign Work Resources to a Task, Project bombs. Simple scheduling seems to work fine.
Recommend you call the number listed above. You might also reference my case number to see if that helps you along. Note: you may have to ask to be transferred to more than one supervisor before you finally find someone who will do it for you. Apparently not all MS support staff know about this fix, and don't believe the web pages. Office and standalone Office applications purchased separately via a retailer and not part of a suite of applications cannot be installed on the same device.
Please contact the Microsoft Answer Desk to obtain a free upgrade for your qualifying standalone applications. You do have to persevere. It took me about ten tries over 5 days with the answer desk online chat before they escalated it. Within 48 hrs they called and emailed me the links. If you have a Microsoft Account associated with one of the products in the left column of the following table, and own one of the standalone applications in the right column of the table, you can contact the Microsoft Answer Desk for a free upgrade to these standalone applications.
Standalone Office products purchased via Microsoft volume licensing agreements are excluded from this offer. In that case, post a description of your problem to this question:. Good News: I now have a free upgrade to a perpetual license of Visio MS did the honorable thing. My sincere apologies to Bill. Bad News: Office is fundamentally incompatible with and it does not look like it ever will be. Good luck everyone. I suspect the free upgrades will only apply to those willing to go through this process in the immediate future.
So my advice is to move immediately. OK - my problem is now solved as well, but it took two hours on the phone explaining the situation to three different support people. Eventually, I had to install a remote management tool on my PC and he then emailed me a link that added an activated version of Visio Pro to my MS account.
I installed it, and the problem is solved. No charge. He said that a new fix was being developed that would be more effective than requiring every angry Visio or Project user to spend hours on the phone.
If they continue with the upgrade, they lose the product. Hopefully this will help others in the same situation to resolve this problem, which never should have occurred in the first place. Note: if you are having problems with MS Support not providing support for this problem post to the above link.
Include a link back to your original question. MS Visio employees are monitoring the discussion and contacting posters privately. You are eligible to a free upgrade.
